Volunteer Opportunities

Imagine the possibilities! With volunteers and community groups working together, there are endless possibilities of making our community a better place to live, work and play! If you are looking for a way to help in the community, we’d like to help you find the right volunteer opportunity for you.

ADD Family Resource Center – their volunteer needs are many and varied:

  • A small team (2-3 people) to give a fresh coat of paint to their front room.
  • Board Members
  • Volunteer Receptionists three days a week (you can choose one day or more), to do filing, answering phones, and e-mails.

ANEB – Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Association (ANEB) is looking for a small team (2-3 people) to spruce up their one-room headquarters in Pointe Claire with a fresh coat of paint.

Big Brothers Big Sister of West Island – is now recruiting volunteer mentors for its elementary, In-School Mentoring Program. Mentors visit a child once a week and share fun activities such as games, crafts, and sports. One child + One hour a week = Two big reasons to go back to school!

CALACS West Island – is a centre that offers support to women that have been victims of sexual or conjugal assault. They are in need of female volunteers to help at their offices. The positions are varied: administration, fundraising, clerical, and counseling among others. Training is provided. Next two sessions are September 6 th and September 13 th.

Centre Bienvenue – If you enjoy cooking then Centre Bienvenue needs your help. They are looking for one or two volunteer cooks to prepare meals at the centre Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Centre Multi-Ressources de Lachine – The Centre needs volunteer drivers with their own automobiles to drive patients to medical appointments. A car allocation and parking stickers to the various hospitals will be provided. The Centre is also looking for friendly visitors as well as callers for their “Bon Matin/Good Morning” telephone program. The program seeks to insure the health and safety of senior, or handicapped residents with a loss of autonomy, through daily telephone calls.

Harvest Montreal– This food bank in St-Laurent helps 204 agencies that in turn help to feed 107,000 people each month. An average of 40-50 volunteers per day is needed to help sort perishable and non-perishable goods.

Maison Donalda Boyer – This seniors’ residence in Dorval is looking for someone to teach basic computer skills (English and/or French). If you enjoy teaching, working with seniors and would like to help some of these residents become more computer-savvy, this opportunity could be right up your alley!

Meals on Wheels Kirkland -In order to be able to continue it's services to the community, the Kirkland Meals on Wheels kitchen is desperately looking for a Cook
Coordinator.  The kitchen will be housed in the church of St. John the Baptist located on Ste. Claire Avenue in Pointe Claire. This is within walking distance of Cartier Avenue between Autoroute 20 and the Lakeshore road.  If you or anyone you know is interested in helping, please contact us as soon as possible at 14-347-5445, 3xt 227

The Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro – is looking for volunteers to help with their seasonal market. The market will take place on three consecutive Saturdays , September 6, 13, and 20 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Centre Communautaire de l’Est.

The objective is to offer residents who live in more isolated areas the opportunity to obtain locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables in order to improve the nutritional value of the meals. The volunteers’ role will be to oversee the activities and insure that everything is done in an orderly fashion.

The Meals on Wheels kitchen serving Pierrefonds is in great need of volunteer cooks and drivers, as well as clean up. The kitchen operates on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and volunteers would be needed once or twice a month.

Moving Ahead – is a program at the Douglas Hospital that matches clients suffering from mental illness to volunteers based on common interests and needs. Volunteers who can spend time (one or more hours per week) with clients living in Pierrefonds to help them lead a more active, happier and fulfilling life are being sought for the program. No experience required.

Scouts Canada – is in need of volunteers for their upcoming programs starting in September 2008. Positions vary from administrative, to group leaders.

Stéri-Animal – Calling all cat lovers! Stéri-Animal has several volunteer opportunities. These include drivers to take cats back from foster homes to veterinary appointments, animal photographers and fundraisers for special events. Foster homes are also sought for cats. Call for more information.

Telecheck – This new telephone service seeks to promote the security of seniors with reduced autonomy through a daily telephone call. Volunteers who enjoy telephone work and who are available for one morning per week are sought to work from the call centre in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation – needs volunteers starting July 14 th, to help with many tasks in preparation for their Walk for Heart event which will take place on September 14 th at Cap St. Jacques.

The Week-end to End Breast Cancer – is still in need of volunteers to help set up and take down tents at Queen of angels Academy in Dorval on August 23 rd and August 24 th. On average there will be about 1000 tents for participants who take part in the 60 km walk. Volunteers will work in shifts of 3 to 4 hours.

Veteran’s Hospital in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue – The Hospital is seeking volunteers who are 18 and older to assist with therapeutic activities.

They also need volunteers to visit with some of their patients, to read to them, play cards with them or just sit and talk for a while.

Volunteer-Assisted Services - Urgently needs drivers to take critically ill or vulnerable patients to medical appointments at West Island or downtown area hospitals. Drivers will be provided with a car allowance and parking permits for the various hospitals.

West Island Association for Intellectually Handicapped, (WIAIH) – is recruiting volunteers for their upcoming Art Show which will take place on Saturday, September 6 th and Sunday September 7 th 2008 at Stewart Hall in Pointe Claire. If you are energetic and enjoy working within a team, then please give us a call.

West Island Council for Psychiatric Needs (Omega) – is looking for volunteers with business acumen and experience to serve on their Board of Directors. Time commitment consists of attending one meeting every four-to-six weeks.

West Island Mission – Volunteer drivers are needed to help deliver emergency food supplies to needy families on the West Island. Drivers should be able to do heavy lifting or have someone accompanying them who can lift and carry boxes filled with food. Deliveries are made on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Please call if you are interested in helping and available at these times on either an occasional (on-call) or regular basis.
